With increasing costs of oil and the cost of shipping coal by ship, island or sea side locations need alternative to traditional diesel generators. There has been some research in submersible tidal wave- driven generators and the use of wind driven turbines or solar cells, but there are often objections to large structures that may interfere with an island appearance.

With respect to Omer's Comment, there is a growing need for drives that can handle motors of sizes 800 HP and larger that are used for heavy loads like long conveyor belts, ore crushers, etc. for mines and for pumps and compressors used for oil and gas industries. There is also a demand for greater efficiencies while minimizing the impact on power factor and harmonics.
