I was wondering do most solar companies sub contract the electrical part of the installationor do they have in house electricians.

Tom,
A lot of the decision to run in house or to sub contract would depend on the size and complexity of the installation. then the wishes of the customer also play into the decision; do they have a favored electrical contractor, are they staunchly anti/pro union. then the overall contract price also needs to be considered; the more people involved the bigger the price tag.

Whether a solar company only uses in house staff or chooses to hire locally depends upon the philosophy and vision of the Developer/EPC. Many companies have their own staff electricians and complete all projects regardless of where the projects are located with ih-house staff. My company's vision is to increase knowledge of renewable energy by providing certified training and permanent employment to the areas in which our installations are located. It is our hope that those we have trained and who do not stay with the company will continue to help their communities and states to become energy independent.
Best regards,
Louise Hart

Both models are common. We (www.GoldenSolar.net) have a Master Electrician and NABCEP certified installers (required in Colorado) and all necessary equipment so we install the systems we sell. We think that is the best model for customers. Just occasionally, when we have gotten too busy, we have subcontract installations to a couple other installers we know we can trust. Likewise when we are not so busy we could install for other companies. We are entering into an agreement now with another company which only sells, so we will be doing more subcontracted installations soon. Much of all this is a matter of work flow for us. It is so easy in this business to get too much work at some times and the opposite at other times.

DAS Technology only use employed electricians to complete both our commercial and domestic installations,. This allows us to have full control and accountability of the quality and customer service our teams deliver.

Lynx utilise both models but would always have a directly employed PM / Senior Electrician supervising any sub contracted work to assure the quality of the work. When we do sub-contract it is to people and companies with whom we have history and can trust the sub-contractors to employ approved methodologies and ensure that Lynx's reputation is upheld.
